Dr Rob David. ‘In search of Arctic Wonders’: Cumbria and the Arctic in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
This illustrated lecture ranges widely over Arctic exploration and whaling in those times. It also investigates the role of Skeffington Lutwidge (Holmrook Hall) on the North Polar Expedition of 1773 [on which Horatio Nelson was a midshipman], Sir John Barrow (born in Ulverston) in promoting Arctic exploration while at the Admiralty, Sir John Richardson (who died in Grasmere) and Sir John Franklin (who is commemorated on the Victoria monument in Dalton Square, Lancaster) in their search for the North-West Passage.
