Mark Hatton is from The Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS). He will lead a visit to Goldscope Mine in the Newlands Valley to see the Elizabethan and Victorian workings. The visit involves walking around 4 miles on uneven surfaces and a walk into the mine to see how it was created and worked. Helmets and head torches will be supplied. 

Driving from Keswick: About a 15-minute drive via narrow country roads with passing places.

Parking: Very limited spaces near Little Town / Low Snab Farm in the Newlands Valley (often with a small donation/honesty box).

Walking from Parking: A 10 to 15-minute walk on footpaths leading to the base of the ridge (Scope End).

The Final Climb: A steep, short scramble up alongside loose spoil heaps to reach the main entrance of St George's Level, roughly 1,000 feet up the slope.

Entering the mine tunnels requires ducking/stooping, a torch or headtorch, and sturdy waterproof boots. (You will be provided with helmets and torches.) Do not venture past vertical shafts or unstable stopes inside the mine.
