Mark Hatton. ‘Elizabethan Miners’.
Mark Hatton is from The Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society (CATMHS). In 1564 a group of Copper Miners came to Keswick from Germany. They came at the request of Queen Elizabeth I to extract rich copper from the mineral veins of Lakeland. Their arrival marked the beginning of significant mining activity in the area, which contributed to the local economy. They brought progress in several fields and brought technology far more advanced than had been seen before. What did they do?
